What Can I Do?
One of the songs that we sing at South Burnaby when the offering is
taken up is this one from More Voices. It communicates the different
aspects of offering of your time and talents.
What can I do?
What can I bring?
What can I say?
What can I sing?
I'll sing with joy.
I'll say a prayer.
I'll bring my love.
I'll do my share.
Words and music by Paul Rumbolt
and Michele
McCarthy.

There are many ways you can share your gift of time as a part of the congregation. You can help make sandwiches for the homeless which are then served at First United Church downtown. You can donate items, purchase items, or volunteer your time at the AOTS garage sales. You can help with Sunday School for the children. You can write Amnesty letters or sign the ones provided at the church. You can participate in special outreach programs, help make the coffee and tea for coffee time after worship, volunteer as a driver for worship or special events, offer to billet for special events. You could help to plan and organize the street festival, Rumble on Gray. On Thursdays you could help in the Thrift shop at the church. These are only a few of the many things you could "do" at South Burnaby.
Offering is collected during the service, and can be designated in several ways. It can support the local church and its programs, upkeep, staff, and ministries. Offering can be designated to support the United Church of Canada's Mission and Service Fund which supports the work of the United Church in Canada and the world. Offering can also be designated to support local outreach programs, including First United Church, Burnaby Christmas Bureau, Burnaby Homeless, Fairhaven, St. Michael's Centre, among many others. Finally, your offering can be designated to support the World Development and Relief Fund (WDR). The United Church of Canada has partner organizations all over the world, and when a natural disaster strikes, money in the WDR fund of the United Church immediately is sent via these partner organizations to support and aid in immediate and ongoing relief efforts.
Another way that you can offer your time and talents to the church
is through participation in worship, church groups, and church
committees. In worship, you can read scripture, offer a story for the
children, or participate in providing the prayers. There are many
groups you can participate in, including several UCW (United Church
Women) units, AOTS (Men's group), Family Matters (for families with
school or preschool aged children), or several committees based on your
interests and gifts.
Music is a very important part of our worship life at South Burnaby
and you can participate in several different ways including the choir,
children's choir, M&Ms, or the Rumblers (church band). For more
information about these groups click
